Lady Britt: a unique onboard entertainment experience

Van Berge Henegouwen Installaties has installed a state-of-the-art entertainment and IT system onboard MY Lady Britt to create the ultimate yachting experience for the Owners and guests. All Owner and guest areas are equipped with wireless 6” Crestron touch panels to control the audio and video on demand system, light, blinds, HD satellite TV, DVD player and central radio and can even be used to make a steward call. Furthermore, VBH took care of the IP telephony (Cisco), lighting control (Lutron) and VSAT communication systems on board.

The AV system on board is based on centrally placed sources distributed over fibre optic cable to all areas via a Full HD capable Digital Media system. A Blu-ray enabled Kaleidescape video-on-demand system is implemented and accessible from every cabin, including the Technogym exercise machines. To let the Owner and his loved ones enjoy the full cinema experience a professional 50” plasma screen has been installed where sound quality comes from surround sound speakers with subwoofers. A unique outside cinema has been created on the Sun Deck. The projector, the 100” cinema screen and cinema speakers pop down from the ceiling at the press of a button.

The Oculus YachtEye, a high-end information providing tool, gives the Owners and guests information about the current location of Lady Britt, the historical and planned route and points of interest along the itinerary. Live sensor data from the bridge is also presented like the current temperature, wind direction, speed and more. A real-time 3D graphic can be displayed on all TVs on board showing the yacht on its current position in Google Earth.

To be as less intrusive to the interior as possible, the majority of the equipment, like the large Full HD LCD and Plasma TV’s are placed on ceiling hinges or behind movable artwork panels. Brought along music stored on iPods can be enjoyed in all rooms by placing this user-device in the central iPod docking station or in local ones.

The Captain and crew have also been thought of; the crew cabins have been equipped with 10.2” flip-down monitors with a built-in DVD player. The Crew Lounge and Crew Mess are fitted with large Full HD LCDs with access to HD Satellite TV and Kaleidescape Video on Demand.

VBH performs AV refit on MY Flying Eagle

MY Flying Eagle is currently undergoing a refit at Lusben, Azimut Benetti’s refit and repair facility. Nakhimov Yachts manages the refit of the 48m Bloemsma & Van Breemen built yacht. VBH has won the order for a refit of the AV system.

For MY Flying Eagle, which was delivered in 2005, VBH will replace the TV’s in all areas with the latest FULL HD plasma and LED TV’s and install region free Blu-Ray players. The owners areas will even be equipped with 3D. The owner and his loved ones will soon enjoy their favourite music and movies through their new Kaleidescape Audio&Video on demand system. They will also be able to watch the full range of the SKY HD channels and Russian HD channels via Platforma HD. On request of the owner, the control of the entertainment system will be done with the new iPad2 in combination with 3rd generation Crestron processors.

The pace of technological change in audio video technology is extremely high and yacht owners always want to have the latest and greatest systems on board. Once their yacht is in operation, it is in their interest that upgrades and refits can be performed in the most cost-effective way. For MY Flying Eagle, VBH has selected the equipment in such a way that the existing cable infrastructure can be re-used; current cabling originally meant for SD analog signals will now carry HD digital signals. As a result, the need for carpentry work and additional cable pulling can be minimized.

Time between project signing and completion date is short. With the right project management, supplier connections and effort of our commissioning engineers, VBH will carry out the project from project signing to commissioning in six weeks.

iPad control: new features

Use your iPad to control your entertainment system, lights and blinds and to make a steward call and use your own user interface to do this. VBH has developed a number of user interfaces with different styles that can be customized to your personal wishes. Watch the following movie for an example.
A new feature has recently been added to our iPad user interface: streaming content on your iPad. For those who don’t want to miss a minute of their favourite program when they leave, it’s now also possible to watch the same TV program or movie on your TV and iPad, as the following movie shows. Simply select the TV channel or movie you’re watching on your iPad and take this content anywhere onboard your yacht.

Satellite Swap & System Maintenance Check

Many yachts have just crossed the ocean to go to the Mediterranean and are getting ready for the new season. Others have moved to the Northern US. In order to keep your Entertainment and IT systems smoothly running and get them up-to-date for the new season, the VBH support team is ready to assist you. Different satellite receivers are needed for different geographical areas. VBH can take care of swapping your current satellite receivers for the ones applicable to the Mediterranean or Northern US. We recommend to combine a satellite receiver swap with a maintenance check of your Entertainment and IT system.

 Optimized internet experience with VBH

Today’s yacht Owners expect to Twitter about their daily activities and watch all the movies, TV channels and newspapers they are used to at home. Simultaneously, they want to communicate to the rest of the world, watch YouTube videos and share photos and videos with his friends on the shore. The same goes for guests and crew. This behavior places high demands on the availability and bandwidth of internet connections. VBH offers two solutions for Network Control and Bandwidth Control Optimization.
Network Control Tool
Depending on geographical location, various network connection possibilities are available onboard a yacht, ranging from VSAT and Fleet to broadband and 3G. VBH has developed its own Network Control tool that manages the onboard internet connections. This software tool enables easy switching between available internet connections and automatically selects the most cost effective network available. In addition, different internet access rights can be defined for specific user groups. This way, internet access can be restricted to Owner and guests when only a high cost network connection is available.
Bandwidth control optimization
Network based applications that are critical to the Owner should always be running, independent of any restrictions in terms of available bandwidth. Through bandwidth control optimization, bandwidth can automatically be guaranteed to specific user groups or applications. Data originating by the owner can always be given priority over others and bandwidth to latency-sensitive applications such as voice and video can be prioritized over other network traffic like recreational web surfing by crew members. In addition, our system is capable of optimizing protocols, which leads to an improved web-browsing experience.
